Description
This course presents an overview of strategic planning in process industries to meet decarbonisation and greenhouse gas emissions reduction. In this regard, the site’s energy demand reduction through energy efficiency by implementing Process Integration concepts such as Pinch Analysis, total Site Integration, and Carbon Emissions Pinch Analysis are used as a tool in the first stage. Then, in the next stage, Fuel Switching from hydrocarbon-based fuels to renewable-based energy sources plays a crucial role.
Course Subjects:
The topics that are included in this course are:
- Introduction to the Global Warming issue and international obligations for countries and large enterprises to reduce their carbon emissions, such as the Kyoto Protocol, Paris Agreement, etc.
- An overview of the two-step decarbonisation method.
- Introduction to energy demand reduction in process industries by optimising energy efficiency to reduce process heat demand Using Process Integration concepts.
- Understand the importance of renewable energy in relation to other energy sources.
- Target fuel switching options for different industries.
- An introduction to different renewable energy sources and preliminary calculations.
- Plan a decarbonisation roadmap for the site considering techno-economical parameters such as NPV, payback, and IRR.
Course Outcomes
The outcome of the course will be:
- Learn various solar energy applications including solar collectors, solar power systems, photovoltaic systems, and passive solar applications.
- Be able to analyse wind turbines and discuss various factors affecting wind turbine applications.
- Learn various hydraulic turbine types and evaluate the performance of hydraulic turbines.
- Learn geothermal heating, cooling, and power production applications.
- Learn to evaluate the performance of various types of geothermal power plants.
- Review biomass resources, conversion to biofuels, biomass products, and solid municipality waste.
- Plan for short-, mid-, and long-term decarbonisation programmes for small-, medium-, and large-scale process industries.
- Learn how to produce an energy transition roadmap using techno-economical parameters.
